It has been established based on the letter dated 23/10/2020, numbered 68308, from the Higher Education Council of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine Genetics Department. 

The Department of Genetics consists of 2 academic staff, including 1 Professor (Prof. Dr. Özgecan KORKMAZ AĞAOĞLU) and 1 Assistant Professor (Dr. Zafer USTA). Additionally, there is 1 teaching staff member (Veterinarian Dr. Özge SİDEKLİ) who has completed a doctoral education in animal genetics in the United Kingdom on behalf of our University (Turkey Consultant Prof. Dr. Özgecan KORKMAZ AĞAOĞLU) under the account of the Ministry of National Education. Furthermore, there is a graduate student (Veterinarian Melek Beyza KARANFİL AYDOĞDU) who will be sent abroad for educational purposes on behalf of our University, conducted by Turkey Consultancy Prof. Dr. Özgecan KORKMAZ AĞAOĞLU. 

Mandatory and elective courses are offered for undergraduate students in the Department of Genetics. In addition to a portion of the Genetics Course and Animal Breeding Course, courses such as Ecology, Genetic Engineering, Medical Biology, Seminar, VEHİP, Graduation Project, and Digitalization in Veterinary Medicine are also provided. In this context, the Department of Genetics contributes to education through research-based learning, laboratory applications, and field studies at different stages of undergraduate education.

 

Faculty members of the department are involved in graduate programs of different departments. In this regard, numerous courses have been taught by faculty members within the department, and under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Özgecan KORKMAZ AĞAOĞLU, 1 doctoral thesis and 1 master's thesis have been completed. 

Various studies based on DNA, RNA, protein, and epigenetics have been conducted by faculty members of the department with different animal species and breeds, and there are ongoing projects as well. For these projects, support has been received from institutions such as TÜBİTAK, the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, MAKÜ BAP, Ankara University BAP, the Western Mediterranean Development Agency (BAKA), and the Burdur Province Breeding Cattle Breeders Association (Burdur DSYB). Within the supported projects, undergraduate and graduate students have been included, contributing to their academic development and enabling them to benefit from scholarship opportunities.

Molecular Genetic Research Laboratories have been established within the department to conduct molecular genetic research. The Molecular Genetic Research Laboratories consist of 2 main parts. The first part includes offices and a room used as a storage area for academic staff and graduate students. The second part consists of an Isolation Unit, Gel Electrophoresis and Imaging Unit, Amplification Unit, Cold Room, and Sterilization Unit.
